Book: On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous | A Novel by Ocean Vuong

We’re reading award-winning poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel “On Earth We’re Briefly
Gorgeous.” This innovative, lyrical novel moves from the narrator’s experience as a
Vietnamese refugee to the blossoming of his queer identity, while weaving in the
often brutal wartime history that shaped the lives of his family, and in turn, his
own. Visceral yet also tender, the book deals with the bonds of family, the
realities of generational trauma, and questions of belonging and American identity.

It was awarded the 2019 New England Book Award for Fiction and named a best book of
the year by Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, TIME, The Washington Post, The New Yorker,
NPR, Vanity Fair, and others.
